Are you doing everything you can to protect your work and personal data?

There has been a lot of publicity around the WannaCry Ransomware virus and we wanted to highlight some steps that everyone should take to ensure that they are doing their due diligences to prevent these types of malware infections at work and at home.

  • Install Updates.   Install Microsoft Windows updates, Apple OS and iOS updates in a timely manner.
  • Update all software.   Insure that updates to third party application are installed as they are released.
  • Monitor email.Be diligent when opening emails and email attachments. If you aren’t expecting the email or the email attachment be suspicious. If you are not sure about and email or an email attachment contact your IT support and ask them about it be for you open it. Most IT support staff will be more than happy to take a look as soon as possible at the item in question.
  • Keep work and personal accounts seperate.    Refrain from accessing your personal email and social media from your work computer. Accessing information that is not protected / secured by the companies preventative measures can lead to viruses on the company network.
  • Use protection.  For the home users we recommend insuring that they have a good antivirus solution installed like Webroot, Symantec, Kaspersky or similar.
  • Backups!  If you happen to get a virus like the WannaCry Ransomware your backup is the single most important recovery tool, unless you plan to pay the ransom. A backup should have an offsite component that has multiple recovery points and this is true not only for companies, but for home users as well.

If you have questions about any of the items listed above please contact your IT support technician and start the conversation on getting better protected.
